Protecting a sealed One Piece display: method and mistakes to avoid

A sealed display loses value through its box, not its cards. Light, humidity, pressure and handling are the four factors to control.
A sealed display rarely loses value because of the cards, which are protected by foil packs. It is the cardboard, the plastic wrap and the corners that degrade. A display kept for six months on a sunlit shelf loses its original colour and no longer sells at the same price as one kept away from light.
The four degradation factors
1. Light
Printing inks and holographic films react to ultraviolet light. Direct sun is the worst case, but permanent strong lighting produces the same effect more slowly. Place displays exposed to light behind a cabinet window or an acrylic panel, and avoid facing them towards a window.
2. Humidity and temperature
Cardboard absorbs ambient humidity: it warps, edges soften and the wrap peels off. A temperate, dry living room is suitable; a cellar, garage or attic should be avoided. Sudden temperature swings cause condensation inside the wrap, leaving permanent marks.
3. Pressure and stacking
Stacking displays crushes the edges of the bottom box. Vertical storage, or a rigid case that takes the load instead of the cardboard, prevents corner collapse — the first thing a buyer inspects.
4. Handling
Most micro-scratches appear while moving items. Handle the display by its flat faces rather than its edges, and avoid sliding the wrap across a rough surface.
What an acrylic case adds
- It removes direct contact: no more scratches on the wrap or fingerprints.
- It takes the mechanical load and protects the cardboard edges.
- It allows display without handling the product itself.
- It does not replace a healthy environment: a closed case in a damp room will not stop the cardboard from moving.
Our cases are made of 5 mm and 8 mm acrylic, closed with 5 mm diameter magnets. Each reference matches one precise display format, English or French: too much play lets the display move, too little forces against the cardboard.
Open it or keep it sealed?
There is no universal answer. A sealed display keeps a verifiable condition and resells as a single product; once opened, its value becomes the sum of its cards, which varies greatly by set. Decide before buying rather than after: an opened display never becomes sealed again, and resealing is considered fraud on the second-hand market.
