Grading a One Piece card: PSA, BGS and CGC explained

Grading is not a guarantee of value: it is a sealed expert opinion. Here is what the companies actually assess and how to prepare a card.
Grading a card means sending it to an independent company that authenticates it, assigns a condition grade and seals it in a tamper-evident holder with a label. Grading does not create value: it makes condition verifiable, which reduces uncertainty for the buyer. On a common card, the cost of the service usually exceeds the gain.
The three most common companies
PSA
An overall grade from 1 to 10, with no detailed subgrades on the label. A 10 is Gem Mint. It is the most liquid reference on the international market, including for One Piece cards.
Beckett (BGS)
Assesses four subcriteria — centring, corners, edges and surface — then derives an overall grade. The Black Label, reserved for cards graded 10 on all four subcriteria, is the rarest.
CGC
Also works with an overall grade and available subgrades, and offers services specific to modern cards. Its presence in Europe is stronger than in its early days.
What is actually assessed
- Centring: how margins are distributed front and back. It is a factory defect, invisible to many sellers, and the leading cause of a missed grade.
- Corners: minimal whitening is enough to cap the grade.
- Edges: chipping and cutting irregularities.
- Surface: scratches, fingerprints, pressure marks, print defects. Inspect under raking light.
Preparing a card before shipping
- Handle the card by its edges on a clean surface, without cleaning it.
- Never try to correct a defect: any cleaning or retouching is detectable and leads to a refusal to grade.
- Place the card in a semi-rigid holder, not a taped toploader: the company must be able to remove it without force.
- Photograph front and back before shipping and keep proof of postage; shipping is at your own risk.
Reading a label
A label states the card name, the set and number, the year, sometimes the language, the grade and a certification number. That number can be checked online in the company's database: it is the only reliable way to verify that a holder has not been counterfeited. Always check this number before a private purchase.
Should you grade a One Piece card?
The maths is simple: the cost of the service, round-trip shipping and waiting time, compared with the observed price gap between the raw and the graded copy. That gap is only significant on sought-after cards — alt arts, secrets, iconic leaders — and only if the expected condition is high. A visibly off-centre or marked card rarely benefits from grading.
